Why I Write

I am storyteller. I often joke that I am a writer and speaker because I have no tangible skills. Writing and speaking provide a medium to tell stories. Some generate laughter or tears. Hopefully a few provide leadership and reflection.

I chose “Take It On The Left Foot” because the phrase is familiar to military folks. When running in formation and signing cadence, the one leading the song (or telling the story if you will) eventually belts out “…take it on the left foot!..the mighty, mighty, left foot!” The next individual then steps out with “I got it!

I served as a United States Marine for twenty-five years. I was an infantryman, a grunt. I served three tours in Iraq and was awarded a Purple Heart after receiving a gunshot and shrapnel wounds on a really bad day. I recognize that I served with legends and walked with heroes. I hope I honor some of them with my stories, or at least convey what it felt like it for those of us who served.

Some of my thoughts are scribbled in green notebooks and stuffed into an old footlocker. They may show up here years later, appearing dark and rambling. I went through several years of an “angry and thirsty time” after the war. Visceral evidence of that time appears in some lines, but bleeding those words provided a measure of healing. I am doing alright now, thankfully so.

Thanks for stopping by Take It On The Left Foot, at some point my song will fade and the next generation will have to hold high the torch as such regiment hand down. Semper Fidelis

  • Prelude to the medevac

Prelude to the medevac The world gets very small when someone is shooting at you.  The most disturbing aspect of the ordeal is not knowing where the fire is coming from, it is the source of the greatest anxiety.  Once the enemy’s location is identified a combination of anger and pursuit set in, a singular…

  • That’s my Commandant

That’s my Commandant In 1995 I was a Lance Corporal on my first deployment. We were on a “med float” aboard the U.S.S. Whidbey Island. The Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC) at that time was General “Chuck” Krulak. General Krulak began his career as a Rifle Platoon Commander in Vietnam. His father, General “Brute”…

  • A visit to the White House

A visit to the White House I went to the White House once.  It was a somber occasion.  The President would be presenting the Medal of Honor posthumously to the family of Corporal Jason Dunham.  Many of us, veterans of Kilo Company, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines were present.  Some of us were still on active…

  • The last letter

The last letter When men go to war, when it gets real, they often write the last letter home. It’s an “open in case I don’t make it” letter. The men who write them are generally quite young. I was old guy when I wrote it, I was twenty-seven. Of course, twenty-seven isn’t old, but…

  • This recruit has a rash

This recruit has a rash Anyone who has been to Marine Corps Recruit Training is familiar with the hygiene inspection. It’s quite a humbling affair. I was surprised at the number of uncomfortable situations I was exposed to in boot camp. I expected yelling, high stress, strenuous activity, discomfort, and doing everything quickly. Other things…

  • Warrior poet

Warrior poet I heard the pipes, I heard the drums. The first called me to be a poet, the second to be a warrior. Can the same man carry a song and a battle cry?Perhaps the bitterness of one makes the other so sweet? I do not know, but their sounds cannot be ignored. The calling is…
