Why My Daddy Cries

When Daddy gets that quiet, and faraway look in his eyes
I wonder back in that war, maybe part of him died
I’m glad he came home, but I wish that he was here
He don’t play anymore, and he always has a beer

CHORUS
He puts on a smile, but I can read his face
And I know that something, is just out of place
He works so hard, and I know that he tries
But somebody please tell me
Why my Daddy cries

I try to get him to talk to me, but it’s just a dead end
But he’ll go on for hours, with one of his friends
Maybe it’s me, I’ve tried so hard to be, a good boy
Want him to be proud of me, and maybe, bring him some joy
Why can’t he be happy with us, and just be glad, he’s alive
Don’t he know my best friend’s daddy didn’t come home? He died
The four of us used to go fish, before the two of them, went off to that fight
Now we never go fishing, and that ain’t right

He puts on a smile, but I can read his face
And I know that something, is just out of place
He works so hard, and I know that he tries
But somebody please tell me
Why my Daddy cries

But I see Mamma, whisper in his ears
She don’t understand it all, but she catches all his tears
It’s plain to see she calms that storm in his soul
I know Jesus and Mamma, can make my Daddy whole

He puts on a smile, but I can read his face
And I know that something, is just out of place
He works so hard, and I know that he tries
But somebody please tell me why…
Why my Daddy cries
