Come on Home to You
I was young and strong and full of dreams
I went off to fight as a U.S. Marine
‘bout bit off more than I could chew
But I buckled down and I dug in
Made myself some lifelong friends
We were ready, when we finally got the call
But what am I doing in the desert sand
Holding this rifle ‘stead of holding your hand
The rounds keep cracking over my head
They hate me, and I don’t like them
The fightin’ over here ain’t never gonna end
What in the world made me go volunteer?
But me and the boys we got a job to do
Just a couple more months, we’re half-way through
I just want to come on home to you
If I ever make it back to the farm
I ain’t ever gonna do no harm
Next time I pull the trigger, it’ll be on an eight point buck
And now there’s a ringing in my head
That IED left four boys dead
Everybody’s shouting, but it seems so far away
I’m laying on the ground and looking at the sky
‘Oh God, is this how I’m gonna die?”
But Doc shows up and he says “not today”
But what am I doing in the desert sand
Holding this rifle ‘stead of holding your hand
The rounds keep cracking over my head
They hate me, and I don’t like them
The fightin’ over here ain’t never gonna end
What in the world made me go volunteer?
But me and the boys we got a job to do
Just a couple more months, we’re half-way through
I just want to come on home to you
Now I bolt awake, with a scream
You say “baby, it was just a dream
You’re home, and I’m right here by your side”
I lay back down and breathe
Your love is all I need
I hold your hand and remember way back when
I said, what am I doing in the desert sand
Holding this rifle ‘stead of holding your hand
The rounds keep cracking over my head
They hate me, and I don’t like them
The fightin’ over here ain’t never gonna end
What in the world made me go volunteer
But me and the boys we got a job to do
Just a couple more months, we’re half-way through
I just want to come on home to you
